The Red Thread

I have been thinking about threads lately, and what they mean.

First, the concept of threads came up a few weeks ago when I was working on a draft of book 2.  My daughter is a fashion designer and artist with a head for business strategy and focus.  I was feeling like there were too many words and I was having trouble connecting them.

She asked me what is my red thread.  She said it is a metaphor used in fashion design. The red thread is the thing on the garment that stands out. It is the thing that connects the elements of a collection and speaks to the whole.

Brilliant.  In all my years of corporate strategy, I had never looked at it this way before.  So I went in search of my red thread - the passion that connects the work.

This second conversation about a thread came up on recently in a conversation with a friend and fellow business owner and yogi.  She said that one has to define the threads and that there must be a connection.

So I started mapping this story on my chalk table in my office, telling the history (His-story  - interesting word) while writing down the "crescendos" of this experience lived so far.  Those are the moments in life when things changed.  Pivotal times and events or people.  The question is why did those moments effect me and what was my response.

I realized that the red thread leads to the the moment of truth in each of those instances when the decisions that I made had nothing to do with money or other material trappings. These moments were about principles: respect, freedom, clarity and health.

  1. I watched a movie (forget name now) where red threads meant, an invisible connection via the thread meant at some point in time, no matter where each lived on the planet, they were destined to meet and thus have impact on each others lives.

Interesting all the different conceptual beliefs people have about the red thread. I googled the following - pertaining to babies, since you have a new baby to love now .........lucky :) -------well a grandbaby I mean

An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.
    (Chinese proverb)

Chinese folklore uses the image of the red thread to describe destiny. A proverb says that invisible, red threads connect newborn babies to all the people who will be important in their lives. The threads shorten as these people, bound from birth, come together.
