The Voice of the Butterfly

Somebody years ago with whom I shared a tumultuous relationship called me a butterfly. At the time, he was pretty frustrated with the fact that he couldn't nail me down to save his life. He was my boss. The conversation went like this: Him: You are a butterfly, flitting about from here to there, I can't catch you. Me: Then stop trying. Him: [Mouth open, asking himself if I really just said what I just said . . . ] Me: OK. Don't worry about it. I will keep you in the loop. You will always know what you need to know. Him: Ok then. That was the first time I had heard that, but he was right. I am a butterfly. He didn't fire me, but on the other hand, it never occurred to me that he might. I am a butterfly. Learning to Dance Again

I recently met a flamingo who has temporarily lost the will to dance. I found her afraid and lost, wandering and frustrated, trapped inside a cage of self -doubt and questioning. She had been a successful flamingo. Her resume of accomplishments well documented and well supported. She was a leader who led with compassion. She could create a vision and plans to get there. She built her resume managing, maneuvering and navigating the ponds of the ruling duck-tators. She had become adept at managing the most caustic of environments, and in fact, flourishing and stepping up to the plate when her duck counterparts scattered for the weeds at the first sign of trouble. Practicing in the Wind

I recently read that fall is the season governed by the Ayurvedic vata dosha . I don't pretend to understand the ancient art and science of yoga. I am a student of yoga. So I am learning. But when I read about the winds of a vata -induced tailspin that takes one away from the centre and throws one out of balance, I could relate. Vata Dosha governs movement in the body. It controls blood flow, elimination of wastes, breathing and movement of thoughts across the mind. Our daughter and son-in-law recently welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world. My special name for him is "King." As in King of the Jungle. I think of the song, the "Lion sleeps tonight" when he finally falls asleep. He is a big boy, born at 10 pounds, 1 ounce, but he is a newborn. So his challenges are many.
